Back in August, I had my annual mammogram, and I shared over on Instagram how that went. In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I am sharing what you need to know before getting a mammogram in today’s blog.
I can still remember the first time I went for a mammogram and the anxiousness I felt, mainly due to not knowing what to expect. After reading this, I hope you will have a better idea and feel less anxious and motivated to schedule your appointment if you have not yet done so.
Knowing Your Body – Are Your Breasts Feeling Tender?
This is my first tip for getting a mammogram. Knowing your body. My breasts tend to be tender during the week before my period and the week of my period. If this is the same with you, I suggest looking at your calendar to calculate whether you are outside that window of tenderness before scheduling it. Expect to feel some discomfort because of how we need to be positioned when getting the mammogram scans, but the last thing you need is to be in double the amount of pain.
Request a 3D Mammogram
If you’re like me and have had to repeat mammograms because of dense tissue, I suggest you check whether your insurance covers the 3D mammogram screening instead of the regular one before booking your next appointment.
Also, confirm that the place you will have it done also does the 3D screening. Most insurances only cover one mammogram per year. A 3D mammogram can eliminate you from repeating it in most cases because it can give a more in-depth scan, including detecting dense tissue. Having to repeat a mammogram can also mean that you may have to pay for it out-of-pocket.
Take Any Previous Mammogram Images With You
This is very important, especially if you have had a mammogram before but it is your first time doing it at a new facility. For example, my mammogram in August was my first time going to MD Anderson Cancer Center, so they didn’t have my previous scans. Still, I got them from the prior facility the day before by going in person and asking for them. It took them less than 30 minutes to put them onto a CD for me. Doing this helps the Doctor to compare your previous mammograms with your most recent (new) one.
No Deodorants, Oils, Perfumes, or Lotions On The Day Of Your Mammogram
You can put these in your purse after the mammogram is completed and you’re getting dressed to leave. But you should not wear these because the particles that make up their composition can be picked up in the scan and show up as a ’cause for concern’ when there isn’t. In other words, these particles can result in you having to repeat the mammogram to ensure there isn’t anything to worry about.
Choose Comfort
As in wearing comfortable clothes, think separates. Since you will only need to remove your bra and top, you may want to wear a t-shirt with jeans or a sweatsuit instead of a dress.
I hope you found these tips helpful, that you feel a bit more comfortable, and that they have given you an idea of what you need to know before getting a mammogram.
